The dangers of living in New York City are often compounded for children who tend to pay less attention to warning signs.
Only yesterday, The New York Daily News reported the death of a 7-year-old boy who was killed when he was struck by a Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority truck in East Harlem.
The boy, Max Mendez, died shortly after the truck crushed his legs at the entrance to the RFK/Triborough Bridge ramp on E. 124th St. just after 8 a.m.
Investigators believe Max tried to dash across 124th St. at an intersection that does not have a crosswalk – and where pedestrians are prohibited. It was not clear if the truck driver ever saw the child before hitting them.
He was not charged with any wrongdoing.
Some residents insisted the intersection, which thousands of cars use to reach the bridge everyday, has long been dangerous – and an accident like this was just a matter of time.
There’s a park right here and a pool, said one neighbor, and kids are always crossing by. The city should do more to prevent accidents like these that happen hazardous places where hundreds of kids come to play.
